Three Random Things or, It’s Allergy Season and I’m Too Tired to Do Much Thinking
April 25, 2008 by Veronica Mitchell
I have a couple of long posts brewing, but the allergies and the pregnancy are making me sluggish. So today is the perfect day for a simple meme. Fortunately for me, Tonggu Momma tagged me for a meme a few days ago, asking me to list three random things about me. Here they are:
1. I never wear shorts. Ever. I don’t want to say something insipid like “I hate my legs,” which wouldn’t even be true. My legs are strong and sturdy and take me on long walks that exhaust my thinner and supposedly more fit friends. I would not trade my legs for anyone else’s. But they are not pretty, and I am a little vain, so I wear pants. In the hottest heat of summer, you will find me in khakis or maybe capri pants, but that’s as far as it goes. Also, I have spent too much of the last five years pregnant for me to reliably shave my legs. Therefore, pants.
2. My favorite sexist joke: How many men does it take to change a roll of toilet paper? No one knows; it’s never been done. (I threw the semi-colon in there for Shannon.)
3. I like meat with sweet sauces. Last night I needed to cook some chicken we had, so I threw it in a crockpot with a tablespoon of freshly chopped ginger, one chopped onion, two small peeled and sectioned clementines, and a 1/4 cup of Triple Sec orange liqueur. It was practically a dessert and I loved it. Az the Husband even liked it after he covered it with salt and pepper. And my favorite stew is this yummy lamb stew with raisins. Mmmmm.
Okay. Anybody wanna be tagged? Three random things is pretty easy. Hmm. I’ll tag Karla, minnesotamom, chickadee, athenainaminivan, and andrea_jennine.

I would totally make that recipe except that once the cork comes out of the triple sec bottle I am unable to stop myself from chugging it all down. I am a lush.
So what is your LEAST favourite sexist joke? Is it told at the expense of the female or the male gender? Or both?
“But they are not pretty, and I am a little vain, so I wear pants.” Sums it up nicely for me.
AD, when I hate jokes, I try to forget them as quickly as possible. But of course when you asked that, a horrible one popped into my head. Now I need a brain cleansing.
Hey, thanks for the tag! I’ll try to get to it next week.
Where did my comment go? Argh.
Okay, again: Alpha Dogma and I have something in common, again.
You should make this chicken recipe from my food site: http://becksrecipes.blogspot.com/2007/11/chicken-marbella.html
It is DELICIOUS.
AMEN to the never wearing shorts. Me either, for the same reasons. I wear capris in the summer. I decided that they say, “Yes, I know it’s hot outside!” without sacrificing my dignity or blinding people with my ghostly pallor.
After 6 years in a Muslim country, I just can’t wear shorts. I feel too shocking. But I think everyone else is happier anyway if I cover my legs with summer skirts or capris. (No tank tops either.)
And I like sweet sauces for meat too. Your soup recipe is somewhat Moroccan. Someday, maybe, I will send you a recipe for a lamb stew that uses prunes and dried apricots and is REALLY GOOD. (You’re supposed to eat it with bread, using your hands. Are you up for it? I bet your daughters are, at least)
and the lamb stew with raisins… my husband informed me tonight that we are making that for Sunday dinner… and that he may need to divorce me in favor of your recipe box… I told him you already shared the recipe and that he is stuck with me
You really don’t wear shorts! I’ve known you nearly a decade, and I never noticed that. What an idiot (me, not you).
If you get to Trader Joe’s ever, stock up on their Jumbo Raisin Blend. These are HUGE raisins, and the juciest I’ve ever had. I put them in cereal, in challah, and in braises. They’d be FANTASTIC in your stew.
I’m in the no-shorts camp too, mainly because my legs NEVER EVER tan. And so, because I don’t wear shorts, any chance they had at actually, maybe, possibly tanning goes officially out the window - sort of a chicken-and-the-egg thing.
Capris I can manage, and I recently discovered that skirts are at least somewhat more flattering than shorts and more comfortable in the summer, but because I live in the Pacific Northwest, it’s sort of a moot point anyway - summers are gorgeous here, but never so hot that a pair of pants won’t do.
Fruit and meat? Ewwwww! I loved the joke, though.
I kid you not: when I read #2, before I got to part where you mentioned me, I smiled inwardly and thought, “oh, that was such a lovely use of a semi-colon.” It’s true. I have no life.
I love sweet, saucy meats also but since we are in Texas this is usually a sweet, honeyish BBQ sauce. I am going to try your ideas.
Thanks for the tag. As I have no life after 9 on Friday night, I have posted my answers.
I don’t wear shorts either, except at the pool. I have incredibly short legs. Even when I’m on the thin side (the three whole minutes in my life when that has been the case), my legs are just horribly chunky and elephant like. They really, really are. I’m so thankful for capris.
I like sweet meat too. The Loved hates it. But I’m the one that cooks so he just deals with it occasionally. One of my favs is crockpot pork loin with cranberries. Num.
Pieces, can you give us the recipe for that crockpot pork loin with cranberries? That sounds GOOD!
Oh, I love meat with fruit sauces too. I just made this the other night:
http://projects.washingtonpost.com/recipes/2008/04/09/pan-braised-chicken-dried-fruits-and-olives/
I made it without the olives and with chicken thighs because they were on sale. Yummmo!
Totally a keeper.
Agree with you on the pants/shorts thing.
Hey, I never wear shorts either! I thought I was the only one. It makes for some looooong summers here in central Texas.
My DH’s favorite sexist joke:
>Why do they call it “PMS”?
>
>
>Because “mad cow” was taken.
I can laugh at that joke except for one week per month. . . .
I feel the same way about shorts. I rarely wear them if ever. It’s capris for me in the summer. Though come to think of it, the other day I did wear a pair of shorts around the house.
Also a fan of the semicolon. Sigh…
Thanks for the tag. I had a lovely “random” thing about myself that I thought I should save somewhere, but alas, I’ve already forgotten it.
i avoid shorts too. and i hope the crop pant never goes out of style.
i think this is a meme i can do.
