Okay, folks. Following Beck and Mad, I am listing quotes from ten of my favorite movies. Identify them if you can. Fortunately for you, my tastes are low-brow and old-fashioned.
1. “Was you ever bit by a dead bee?”
Walter Brennan’s persistent question in To Have or Have Not. Genni got it right.
2. “This is true love. You think this happens every day?”
The Princess Bride, of course. Only the hardest heart could scorn this movie. Chrissy got it right first.
3. “You’ve got taste in clothes, taste in food….”
“And taste in women. I like your flavor.”
Angela knew that this pleasingly cheesy line was from the seduction scene on the train in North by Northwest.
4. “In the old days, they used to put your eyes out with a red-hot poker. Any of those bikini bombshells you’re always watching worth a red-hot poker?”
Sherri was the only one to recognize this quote from Rear Window, one of the best movies ever. There are a lot of Hitchcock movies on this list, and I had to actually stop myself from adding more.
5. “What would you have me do? Look at my men. Their courage hangs by a thread. If this is to be our end, then I would have them make such an end as to be worthy of remembrance.”
Karen got The Two Towers. I love the LOTR movies, and this was the best of the three. Gives me goosebumps.
6. “I sort of wish you hadn’t.”
“What?”
“Divorced me. It makes a fellow lose faith. It gives him a feeling he wasn’t wanted.”
“That’s what divorces are for.”
Sue and Beck got His Girl Friday, but Beck’s comment drifted off into the ether of lost comments. I suspect it may be the hidden cause behind the hole in the ozone layer. This is an excellent movie, full of fast-paced dialogue that Hollywood can’t quite muster today.
7. “I really wouldn’t care to scratch your surface, Mr. Kralik, because I know exactly what I’d find. Instead of a heart, a handbag. Instead of a soul, a suitcase. And instead of an intellect, a cigarette lighter which doesn’t work.”
Rachel was the first to say Shop Around the Corner. If you have never seen it, get it now. Now, now, now. And curl up on the couch with a cup of cocoa and someone snuggle-able.
8. “She talked about the day you met, and she cursed it. But then I saw her remember how happy you were together, before the Bishop’s curse. And her eyes glowed. No, she glowed. She loves you more than life, Captain. She’s had to.”
JulieC got this one first. I have loved LadyHawke since I was a teen. I can’t help myself.
9. “Heroin. Peppermint flavored heroin.”
Andrea Jennine was the first to guess this one. Charade is a delightful suspense movie starring Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn. You may have noticed my list is a little Cary Grant heavy.
10. “Hugging’s very different. Hugging, that involves arms and hands, and leaning is whole bodies moving in, like this. Leaning involves wanting… and accepting.”
Andrea Jennine also was the first to get While You Were Sleeping. It’s one of my favorite romantic Christmas movies, after Shop Around the Corner and It’s a Wonderful Life.

#2: Princess Bride
Is #9 Trainspotting? I’m thinking not, but just taking a guess because of all the heroin in the movie. And the most disgusting toilet in Scotland.
#8 – Ladyhawke! I LOVE Ladyhawke!! Woo Hoo! I can’t believe I was able to guess one!
#6 – Philadelphia Story?
#9 – Charade?
#10 – While You Were Sleeping?
I just have to share that even just READING number ten makes my heart go thumpetythumpety. LOVE that movie. LOVE.’
The only other one that other people haven’t already answered that I know is that the one with Mr. Kralik is “The Shop Around The Corner”.
I thought I knew movies, but I only know 2 of these:
#2 Princess Bride, of course!
#10 While You Were Sleeping
and I know #5. I’ve heard it, but I can’t think of it. It’s making me a little crazy.
Um, something is eating your comments.
#2 Princess Bride of course
#6 – His Girl Friday! (love)
#5 Two Towers –
also happy find anyone else who loves Lady Hawke. My dear husband pops it into the player on some sort of rotating basis that has to do with lunar cycles, I think.
Sue – you genius, I couldn’t come up with His Girl Friday and it was on the tip of my tongue!!!
#2 – The Princess Bride
#5 – LOTR; can’t name which one, but I remember it was Theoden, because I can hear him in my mind
Bah, all I could deduce was #2, princess bride. What does this say about my taste in movies. Or yours? Fun game though.
#4 is Rear Window which I love love love love love. It is my favorite Hitchcock, and that’s saying something. But really, it borders on perfect– Grace Kelly? Check. Jimmy Stewart? Check. Thelma Ritter? Check. Raymond Burr? Check. Fabulous soundtrack? Check? Implicates the viewer as a moral agent? Checkitty check!
Oh! I’ve had my scifi/fantasy fan club flag revoked for not recognizing Theoden’s speech from the Two Towers! Bah. I’m blaming Momnesia!
I knew the Princess Bride quote and the one from LOTR. I recognized number 10 but not sure what movie . . . and all the rest, I’m clueless. LOL. My husband would probably know most of them being that he is the biggest movie nerd I know.
#2: Princess Bride
#3: North by Northwest (train scene)
#5: The Two Towers (or Henry V)
#9: Pulp Fiction?
#10: While You Were Sleeping
Hey there’s no quote here from that cheesy Johnny Depp movie we watched with port and chocolate cake. The one with Marlon Brando. (Or is there, and I missed it?)
#1 To Have and Have Not
OOPS! I meant to ask you if that was right, Slim.
Oh, I know most of these!!!! Probably because I love old movies.
1 To Have and Have Not
2 The Princess Bride
3 North By Northwest
4 Rear Window
5 ??????????????
6 His Girl Friday
7 The Shop Around the Corner (although I liked “You’ve Got Mail” better — I know, sacrilege)
8 ??????????????
9 Charade (Audrey Hepburn is amazing)
10 While You Were Sleeping
I should have asked … am I right on any of them???
Oh, I love this! I held up a piece of paper on the screen so I wouldn’t see your answers before I tried to guess. I only got about half of them. I think I do this too.
Darn! I totally missed this one, and I would have gotten several of them!
[...] place, where I correctly identified Heathers (she said modestly). Then I saw it at Beck’s and Veronica’s, where I was too late to play. Then I saw it at Piece’s, where again, I correctly identified [...]
I can’t believe I missed this! I would have gotten a nearly perfect score. It’s clear that we have the same taste in movies that must be memorized.
Oh, I love Rear Window and Princess Bride but I stink at remembering movie lines. I was WAY off with my Trainspotting, huh?
