A Little Serendipity

January 11, 2008 by Veronica Mitchell

On Christmas Day my blog got a comment from someone who had never commented before. I clicked on the link to her blog and looked around. I thought, “Hmm. She looks familiar. I knew a Melanie in college who looked just like that.”

We have emailed a few times and, sure enough, she IS the same Melanie I went to college with. She is just as clever and funny as ever. We were friends in college, but we lost touch. She has been reading my blog for a couple of months, but since I use a pseudonym, she did not know we were old friends. It has been great to catch up with her, and you can meet her for the first time at her blog.

From this experience, we can learn several things:

1. Veronica compulsively checks her blog even on Christmas Day.

2. Always leave a comment on Veronica’s blog.

3. Veronica is your old college friend.

Thank you for your attention.

That’s cool. I keep wondering if I’m going to bump into someone that I know IRL in the blogosphere. So far, though, it hasn’t happened yet.

    Alternative hypothesis

    1. Veronica is only complusive about her blog.

    2. Veronica went to a small college and knew everyone there by name.

    3. Only intelligent and kind people comprehend and reply to Veronica’s blog making it more likely her college friends would find her.

    brother (the exception to #3)

I’m only replying because I want so badly to fit into brother’s statement #3.

We did not go to college together. You are young enough for me to burp.

There must have been something familiar to her as she read…she was drawn to you here as she was in real/offline life.

Three years ago I was with my family waiting to be seated at Friday’s. A woman looked at me quizzically and asked, “Are you…or were you…Ann(ie) MaidenName?”

    “I *am* or *was* or….yes. Wait, you’re–”

She was an old friend from grade school (on up through high school), but we hadn’t seen each other since high school graduation 20 or so years earlier. She said, “I looked at your little girl and thought, ‘that girl looks so much like Annie MaidenName…I wonder what her mom looks like?”

That was a strange and wonderful moment. One of my daughters shares my hair color and eyes. She’s the one who tipped her off.

So. Strange moments in unexpected reunions, eh? Yours is much more amazing.

I too want to fit into Brother’s number three. How strange is it that she was reading your blog and didn’t know it was you? Too cool.

I love “small world” stories! My MIL was visiting over Christmas, and told me that through some odd series of conversations they figured out that her down-the-road neighbour in uber-rural northern Ontario is a regular reader of my blog, and is friends IRL with some of my bloggy friends.
