Fall Y’all Bloggy Giveaway
October 31, 2007 by Veronica Mitchell
(I just spent a good thirty seconds debating whether the a in “y’all” should be capitalized in a title.)
Shannon at Rocks in My Dryer is hosting a giveaway carnival on her blog. Here’s the gist:
The Fall, Y’all Bloggy Giveaway is simply a carnival. You host a giveaway at your own blog, for anything you like–something you’ve made, something you’ve bought, etc. Be creative! Make it something that is reflective of you.
You will ask readers to leave a comment ON YOUR POST in order to be entered in your giveaway…
Please hold your drawing sometime during the weekend of November 2-4. I will host a different Mr. Linky here beginning that Friday so you can link over to your post announcing the winner, just to make it easier for everyone.
You can visit Shannon’s bloggy giveaway page to enter other drawings.
I debated whether to play along with this. What could I possibly give away that would both express me and not break the bank? I don’t craft much. I just finished a cross-stitch, but I plan to give it to my sister-in-law for Christmas. I am a very good baker, but even cookies, which travel well, would not be at their best by the time they made it through the mail, and I don’t think I want you to know my baking at its second-best.
I decided to set the idea of bloggy giveaways aside and read a book. I was selecting which paperback to read when it dawned on me that I could give away some of my paperbacks. Of course! A set of used paperbacks might not thrill anybody but me, but it definitely expresses who I am. I almost live for used paperbacks. It comes right after Jesus. And maybe after the kids.
So here’s the deal. I have eleven used paperbacks that I will happily mail to the lucky reader whose name is drawn from the comments on this post. I want to be fair to everyone, but I don’t want to spend the kids’ grocery money, so the giveaway is open to all, but if you live outside North America, I will only mail four books to you, so if you win, you will have to choose which four you would like (you don’t have to choose right now). The only exception to this are American military personnel using an APO address, because USPS mails to them for the standard domestic rate.
You don’t have to be a blogger to enter, as long as you leave me your email address so I can contact you if you win. Keep in mind, if you win, you will also need to give me (privately) an address to mail it to. I will draw the winner’s name on November 3.
I can’t promise that you will love all of these books, but I enjoyed them, either for deep meaningful reasons, or as consumable fluff for a cool fall afternoon. Here they are:
L.M. Montgomery Anne of Green Gables
L.M. Montgomery Anne of Avonlea
Frances Hodgson Burnett The Little Princess
Walter Wangerin, Jr. The Book of the Dun Cow
Robin McKinley Sunshine
Erle Stanley Gardner The Case of the Dangerous Dowager
Erle Stanley Gardner The Case of the Demure Defendant
Connie Willis To Say Nothing of the Dog
Jane Yolen Briar Rose
Nancy Mitford Pigeon Pie
Laurie B. Clifford Evergreen Castles
So c’mon, lurkers! Here’s your chance to leave a comment and get something for it.

I love books! Count me in
I love Anne of Green Gables but I must confess I haven’t heard of the other ones. Obviously I need literary help. Please sign me up for the giveaway.
Wow, great giveaway. Please enter me!!
I love to read!
LilacButterfly [at] earthlink.net
The only book I have read on your list is Anne of Green Gables. I would love to read Nancy Mitford, and read the Secret Garden so would love to read the Little Princess. Oh new friends…
Books! Books! Please count me in!
What a great giveaway - you’re a woman after my own heart, for sure! Please count me in…
anne of green gables still gives me tingles.
Those are some titles that I have never read! Count me in
Fun! Tossing my hat in.
Count me in, I’d love to read Pigeon Pie.
What great books!! I’d love any of those!
You can never have too many paperbacks!!
Count me in! Regardless of if I win some books or not, I plan on picking up the Robin McKinley book Sunshine ASAP. I LOVE her writing!
Nice set of books….great giveaway!
neat!
Sweet! I’ve been wanting to de-lurk anyway, and this is the perfect reason to throw myself into the comments!
What a great selection of books. I’ve read about half of them but have heard of the rest. This is an excellent idea for a giveaway. When I have more commenters, I will try it. We now have no more walls for bookcases, so we have to give away a book to buy one.
count me in!!!! Thanks for the contest, I love this!!!
What a lovely selection of books! I would absolutely love to be entered.
I love books. Would love to win.
Well who doesn’t love books? Count me in
Seriously, I would love to own these books. I hope you’re not giving away your only copies of Anne.
Used schmused! A paperback book, a good one that is, is a great gift anytime. What I particularly like is the fact that the book comes with the backing of a trusted recommendation–making it all the more in value and gift. Count me in, please. This would be a treat to win.
Oh, I want to play! Definitely add me to your list.
I assume you get my E-mail address from the comment form, but just in case it’s arcetucker on yahoo.
I would love these! Thanks!
BOOKS! I have almost worn out my Anne set (yes I am a geek) and can’t wait to try the rest out!
I’d love to win these! Count me in.
Oooh Oooh Oooh! Books for FREE? I’m throwing my hat in.
I think we have most of these (my hubs loves Connie Willis so much that, when he worked for Breakpoint, he named his occasional column “The Sheep Files”).
But not quite all, so enter me, please!
The Anne books AND Little Princess? Love, love, love!!!!

MMMM books. I can sit and read a good book all day, and then when I have finished it, I can read it over and over. This is the BEST giveaway! You are so very wonderful to share this with us!
Yay! A book giveaway! I’m in!
Ahhh, now they all come out
Count me in too!!!
Don’t includ me in the drawing, I have FAR too many books already. I just wanted to comment that I think it’s a really cool idea. May the best commenter win!
I am the ultimate lurker as I have read your blog daily for months and months and I’ve never, ever commented. I couldn’t resist delurking for books! : )
Free books are always a good thing!
Like you, I don’t make squat. But I wanted to throw my name in the hat if for nothing else, I could see some good comments regarding my post. So far, it’s been well worth it!
I read like there’s no tomorrow and there are a few books in the offering that I’ve never seen before… Woo hoo! New titles!
I can’t believe I haven’t read a single one of those! Please count me in.
Awesome! I love books.
I love used books! (well, and new ones. and library ones. and, well, books). I can’t remember how many times I’ve read Little Princess. I must read it to my princess-crazy daughter soon…
Count me in!
please count me in.
Count me in.
Great books! Count me in!
All right, all right! I’ve been lurking for 6 months. I love your blog and knowing my additive tendancies I only let myself read you and Antique Mommy (other than met-face-to-face friend blogs). Love the chance to have books that belonged to THE Veronica Mitchell. Not sure if I really wanted to leave my website address because I know how you feel about the incorrect use of English and I know my love of the written word does not always translate into accurate application.
What a great idea - I wouldn’t know what to choose though as the couple of titles I have heard of we have already ( Anne books and The Little Princess ) You would have to surprise me if I won!
They’d get a good read in our house. Count us in.
Oh my…what a wonderful list! How very nice of you to depart with such wonderful books. Thank you so much for including me in your giveaway
Yes, enter me in the drawing, even though I already have four editions of the Anne books already. You can never have enough Anne, can you?
And I think you chose wisely–I don’t think you would capitalize the “A”. You wouldn’t write “I’Ve” or “We’Ll”, would you? And we certainly know that “Y’all” is a contraction just as legitimate as all those others, right?
Some of these I have read before, and I love them. I’d be interested to read the rest of them.
Please enter me in the drawing. I’ve been lurking for months, but you know how to draw a girl out.
And I agree with Shannon on the capitalization of y’all.
Please enter me!! Books are always welcome.
I am a used book addict who now lives in the Philippines. Believe it or not, books that overflow the bins at Value Village, Goodwill and other trift stores, are regularly packed up and sent here, where they are sold to desperados such as I for more than I would pay for them in a thrift store back home. Three quarters of your offering I have read and loved, so a mere four would be perfect, should I be the chosen…
And I’m not even a LURKER.
Dang.
I’m a sucker for any book. Please count me in!
Several are books I want to get, and I’m usually game for any book that isn’t smutty or vulgar. count me in, please!
Definitely count me in - my girls are getting old enough to really appreciate books and I’ve really enjoyed reading to them. Thanks for this chance! ~v
Please consider me entered.
Count me in, please! What a great selection!
Oh what fun! Great idea. Of course I want a chance to win, too.
Wow! How great. I have four children under the age of 5. Please, count me in!
Always love book giveaway! Thanks.
I’ve been trying to let myself read again.
Let?
Okay. I’ve been trying to convince BRADEN to let me read again.
I’d love some books to inspire that desire further.
Ohmigosh, please pick me! Please! I have to confess that I’m tempted to try a little off-the-record wrangling–I’ll “draw” you to win my prize if you “draw” me.
But that would be wrong.
Right?
I am an avid reader so this would be great.
Count me in please. email is in my profile.
WOW - WOW — I can’t say anything more!
Oh, this sounds wonderful! It also sounds like you need to know about paperback swap, which you can find at http://www.paperbackswap.com. When your book is requested, you pay to ship it and then get a credit to request another book. Lots of fun!
Ooh, I’d love these! Please count me in.
We are very much avid readers here so used books is the perfect thing for us. Count me in!!

Thanks!
I’ll bite. Some of these are familiar to me and others are not. I’m willing to break out of the box though! LOL! Thanks for offering these!
Would love to add to my winter reading stash! Thanks for offering these!
OH! I LOVE the Anne of Green Gables series!
I would love to be entered to win these titles. I have an advanced reading 7 year old and it is so challenging to find titles that are at her reading level but still thematically appropriate. The Anne of Green Gables series and The Litlle Princess have both been suggested to us.
Jenny
Awesome giveaway! Please count me in! Thanks!

I’ve read 4 of those…but would love to read the rest!

I have just spent a few very pleasurable minutes enjoying your blog. Can’t remember how I got here…but it’s sure been fun! And then you directed me over to navel gazing and that just cracked me up. Anyhow, I’d love some paperbacks - even if I have already read a few of them
