Two Memes and a Carnival
August 25, 2007 by Veronica Mitchell
There is anxiety and disturbance at Mitchell House this week. I will explain eventually, but for now my creative juices are on the wane (is that a mixed metaphor? You see what I mean).
What better time to catch up on my memes?
T with Honey tagged me for the Moaning Meme. Here we go.
5 people who will be annoyed you tagged them.
One person who will be annoyed that I’m not tagging five people: the originator of this meme.
4 things that should go into room 101 and be removed from the face of the earth.
- Affected allusions to 1984, especially by people who have not read it.
- Girdles or waist-cinchers or whatever people call them nowadays.
- Poison ivy.
- Lemonade made from powder.
3 things people do that make you want to shake them violently.
- Boys whose pants are falling off as a fashion statement.
- Calling any new mixed drink a “martini.”
- YouTube grammar.
2 things you find yourself moaning about.
- Standing up.
- Shopping for clothes.
1 thing the above answers tell you about yourself.
I am well on my way to being the crotchety old coot I’d always hoped.
Valiens tagged me for the Stuart Smalley “I Like Myself” Meme. Ever since I first saw this meme, I have been dreading it. I was sure it would make its way to me eventually. I am supposed to list ten things I like about myself. Here they are:
1. I have a curmudgeonly dislike for listing things I like about myself.
2. I can follow logic that is not my own, even when I disagree with the conclusions.
3. I get irony.
4. My curly hair.
5. I have easy births (so far).
6. I bake from scratch and I do it well.
7. I understand the power of silence.
8. I prefer walking.
9. I value the sentimental over the expensive.
10. I resist fashions.
Lastly, Sycorax Pine, a wonderful book blog I found through Semicolon, is hosting the Unread Authors Challenge, where we volunteer to read six books from authors we’ve always meant to read, but never have.
Most of the books I forget to read are from authors I have already read at least once, so this was a hard list to create. Here are my six books to be read by February, all form authors I have never tried before:
Anne Bronte Agnes Grey
Anne Bronte The Tenant of Wildfell Hall
John Webster The Duchess of Malfi
Patrick O’Brian Master and Commander
Katherine Mansfield Stories
Wilkie Collins The Moonstone
I will write about them on my book blog as I finish them.
That is all my bloggy business for today.

I love Wilkie Collins! He’s very Victorian and dramatic, but lots of fun. I persuaded one of my thesis students to write on “The Moonstone” this year (EVERYBODY writes on Steinbeck and it gets so old). I actually prefer “The Woman in White” to “The Moonstone” though.
Nah, I’m not annoyed that you didn’t tag anyone for this. It took me 3 weeks to get around to it myself.
Thanks for playing along.
All the things you like about yourself are things I like about myself, too. Except the curly hair thing. Not that I don’t like my curly hair, I don’t HAVE curly hair. But I like my red hair.
Oh, you should really consider “The Woman In White” for your Wilkie Collins book. Spectacular!
Welcome to the challenge, Veronica! This is a great list, filled with some authors and works I have really enjoyed. I just read “The Tenant of Wildfell Hall” this year, in fact, and (although it wasn’t as good as Emily or Charlotte’s work that I have read) it was very, very gripping. Meanwhile, Wilkie Collins is a favorite of mine as well. I loved both “The Moonstone” and “Woman in White,” and I think “Armadale” will be my next venture into his work.
Meanwhile, thanks for the kind words about my blog - I am glad to hear you are enjoying it! I am definitely going to add your blogs to my Google Reader…
Anxiety & disturbance? Oh dear!
I am so glad you linked to your book blog! I somehow neglected to add it to my bloglines and forgot you had it. It’s on my list now.
Great memes, and I’m delighted to see POB on your reading list.
And now, back to Treasure Island, which I hope to finish this weekend and (belatedly) blog about soon.
I just read Master and Commander this month and it was so much fun. I’m a pretty peace-loving person, but I found myself swept up into the battle scenes. I’m still thinking about the changes in our ideas about courage, and looking forward to continuing the series.
The O’Brien books are divine - you may well find yourself reading the whole 18 book series.
Yes, I am annoyed you didn’t tag anyone and I’ll have you know, I’ve read 1984 twice
However figuring that no one else on the internet would have done I decided to use the more popular meaning! Geeze….
On the other hand some great moaning, thanks for doing the meme, and for adding the link!
Good luck with the books.
You know what my favorite thing about Minute Maid Light is? The label brags “Made from Real Lemons!”
Count me as another vote for The Woman in White. And I’d read The Master of Wildfell Hall before Agnes Grey, I think (unless you like to save the best for last, then you should do them the other way around).
I gave you an award/meme - forgetting, of course, the meme-purge that BOTH you and Beck did this weekend. Alas.
Those are fun.. I also much prefered The Woman In White.
I love that you moan about standing up.
