Stacie came up with this meme, and I liked it so much (not least because it reminded me of Riley’s Christmas newsletter) that I thought I would try it. Plus, I just recently sent in an actual alumni announcement, and was wondering how I could have done it better.
The idea is to write two blurbs for the alumni newsletter, updating your life. The first should be the perky, show-offy kind that everyone writes. The second should be the darker side of honest.
Version 1: Veronica just gave birth to her third beautiful daughter. She and husband Az are celebrating their eleventh anniversary soon. We just fall more in love every year! We continue to live in our historic home with the beautiful view in Our City, where Veronica is a stay-at-home mom. It’s the best job I ever had! We welcome letters from our college friends.
Version 2: Veronica just gave birth to her third beautiful daughter. She and current husband Az have been married eleven years, with no end in sight. Fortunately, after having three babies in four years, we are generally too tired to argue. Our money-pit of a house is still solid after a hundred years. We wish the same could be said for the neighborhood. On a sunny day we can see how well the smog covers downtown. Veronica is a stay-at-home mom and is rather desperate for adult interaction, so even though she hasn’t spoken to any of you since graduation, if you write to us, she’ll probably read it.

I’m all over it.
And this meme is hysterical, by the way.
Ha! She’ll probably read it–that’s the best.
Very nicely done. I would totally write to anyone who put version 2 in my alumni magazine.
I found your blog via boomama and this meme. I’m about 3 courses short of ABD…4 kids in 20 months. Instant connection! I’ll be back to read more!
Very amusing, I’ll try to get on it if I get a few minutes to myself.
My dad used to write ‘creative’ ones for himself, and by ‘creative’ I mean must made them up. I believe the number of children he had varied widely every year…
That is TOO funny. I am so with you on the stay-at-home-mom desperation for adult interaction thing. Our house is only 67 years old, but I sometimes think no one except us ever did any maintenance. I wish it were as solid as your house.
I love snark.
Hey you have to e me if you tag me–I’m so behind on my blog-reading because I rarely get online these days. (Soon, soon. We are househunting. You wouldn’t believe how expensive everything is when you are used to an African budget)
I LOVE this meme–I promise to get right on it
